Sukkerhuset at Kalvskinnet |

|
Sukkerhuset was the largest building in town when first constructed as a sugar refinery (in 1754), Trondheim's first industrial company, it is the oldest factory building in Norway.
Hans Ulrich Mølmann was granted a royal privilege to establish this factory to supply sugar and syrup to the region. The West Indies-Guinean Trading Company in Copenhagen arranged for the transportation of slaves from West Africa to the sugar plantations in the West Indies, returning with cargoes of unrefined sugar for the Danish-Norwegian refineries. In Trondheim a shipping company was established for the purpose of operating this cargo route.
Erich Christian Dahl bought the property in 1850 and started a brewery which continued until it moved in 1984. Sukkerhuset, which was given official heritage staus in 1927, has lately been rebuilt and is now used by the university and engineering college.
