Art in Breidablikk Kindergarten

Marit Justine Haugen and Dan Zohar made the sculptural installation ‘Hule Hi’ for Breidablikk Kindergarten at Heimdal, where the children actively used it for a long time. This artwork is a fun structure to frolic in and around. Due to its functionality and aesthetic qualities, this children’s cave became Runner Up in British journal Architectural Review’s annual line-up for the most interesting international architecture projects in 2011.

‘Hule Hi’ is a 50 cubic metre cubic play structure with cavities, hiding places, corridors and narrow passages. Made from 1.5 tonnes worth of recycled materials, it is regarded as an original and interesting recycling product. However, whilst situated in the kindergarten’s outdoor area the artwork was increasingly subjected to vandalism, and it is now in storage whilst an alternative location is under evaluation.

Marit Justine Haugen studied architecture at NTNU (2000) and fine arts at the art academies in Jerusalem and Oslo (2005). Architect’s office HZA was established in Oslo in 2006, and their work includes tourist route projects for the Norwegian highway authorities, Statens Vegvesen, as well as other work spanning a wide spectrum.
