Art - King Haakon VII

'Kong Haakon VII'. Artist: Stinius Fredriksen 1972.
Here is King Haakon VII (1872–1957) in his general's uniform. The plinth features the King's emblem with a leaf garland.
This monument was one of the designs in a competition for the King's monument in Oslo in 1957, where Nils Aas submitted the winning design. It was unveiled on the centennial of the King's birth, the third of August 1972. The King was crowned in Nidaros Cathedral in 1906.
Through his work for Nidaros Cathedral Restoration Workshop, Fredriksen greatly inspired the sculpting community there. Though he worked within the framework of the Gothic style, this did not prevent him from also making his mark as an experimental artist working in a modernist direction.
