Art - Monument to Thomas Angell
Artists: Architects Karl Norum & Carl Ludvig Jacobsen 1895.
"All my possessions, whether they be cash, minerals, land, bonds, etc. (…), I donate to the poor." (From Thomas Angell's will of 1767). Thomas Angell (1692–1767), who was a merchant and founder of endowments, died without marrying, and willed his vast fortune to various causes. For the first 50 years after his death, Thomas Angell's endowments and foundations covered the bulk of the town's social expenses, contributing to funding of schools for the common people and financing social institutions, such as Thomas Angell's stuer (rooms), Thomas Angell's Hus (house), Kalvskinnet Hospital and the new main building of Katedralskolen (still a Norwegian upper secondary school). The monument is located right across from Thomas Angell's House on Bispegata. It is designed as a stone obelisk with an inlaid copy of Hans Michelsen's portrait bust from 1845, made by Carl Ludvig Jacobsen. The original is in the Festival Hall of Katedralskolen. The monument was designed by the architect Karl Norum. The inscription on the reverse of the monument reads: "The town of Trondhjem erected this memorial to its benefactor".
