Networking During Studies

Through a collaboration with "Fornybarhetsklyngen", Sofie gains a larger network while writing her master's thesis
Sofie Møller is getting her master's degree in energy and environment at NTNU. She is interested in the environment and life cycle and is now writing a master's thesis where she studies energy use in the aquaculture industry.

Engaged supervisor

It was a coincidence that led to Sofie now researching energy efficiency in fish farming. She gives her supervisor, Johan BERG pettersen, at the program for industrial ecology at NTNU, much of the credit for her interest in the topic.
"It's a bit of a coincidence that I became interested in fish farming have a very inspiring mentor who also got me involved. Now I find it very exciting to write about this changing industry - which is important for Norway.”
“In addition, it is interesting to work closely with the industry. I can find out whether the companies are only interested in the salmon, or whether they also are interested in reducing emissions.”

Cluster Collaboration

The renewable cluster is a business cluster with several member companies, where the companies want to contribute to sustainable value creation. They are looking at opportunities for reduced climate impact and better energy efficiency in the aquaculture industry in cooperation with NTNU, Enova and NCE Aquatech Cluster.
In the master's thesis, Sofie identifies how much energy is used, especially on feed barges, and whether they can move away from diesel and switch to shore power to switch to a "cleaner" energy source.
In order for the issues in the assignment to be real and up-to-date, she talks to companies in the cluster collaboration, and so she gets to know what is going on in the industry.
“I have attended work meetings where we discuss what should be researched and what needs the companies have. I am free to choose and can collect data from various ‘players’.”

The Future

She thinks the theme she works with is very interesting. If the research project continues, she may apply herself further. No matter which direction she chooses after studying, there is nothing to say at the level of ambition:
“I want to work to reach the climate goals of the fish farming industry.”
