Art - Judge Jacob Lindboe's Sepulchral Monument

Jacob A. Lindboe (1843–1902) was a high-court lawyer in Trondheim. He served in Stortinget (the Norwegian Parliament) for Venstre (the Norwegian Liberal Party) for some time, later becoming a judge. The artist (Gustav Vigeland, who is famous for Vigeland Park in Oslo) worked on Nidaros Cathedral between 1897 and 1902, modelling cornice figures, gargoyles and Biblical figures for the chancel arch. As time passed, however, he became increasingly critical of creating art in the style of a bygone period. He had also been given the assignment of sketching a fountain to be placed at Ilevollen, a project that never came to fruition. He did, however, carry out a commissioned assignment of creating a burial sculpture or sepulchral monument for Judge Jacob Lindboe, which he designed as a fountain and in a style that we generally recognize as his. Five naked men pose encircling a cup-like stone urn. This urn is the only outdoor work by Vigeland in Trondheim. The National Museum of Decorative Arts and Design (Nordenfjeldske kunstindustrimuseum) has a replica of the urn.
