Art - Memorial to Matthias Conrad Peterson

Artist: Kristofer Leirdal (1997).
On the 17th of May, 1997, this stone memorial to Matthias Conrad Peterson (1761–1833) was unveiled, and in 1998 it was given a portrait relief based on a painting and modelled by Kristofer Leirdal.
As a young man Matthias Conrad Peterson arrived from Schleswig in Denmark, and worked initially as a clerk in a shop in Trondheim. He became the editor of the regional newspaper Adresseavisen, a captain in the citizens' militia and director of the Central Bank of Norway. On the 17th of May, 1826, he instituted the first citizens' parade in Norway to celebrate the Norwegian Constitution, a tradition that is very much alive to this day. The parade went from the Ila Park and towards the city centre.
