Art - Ranheim Station

'Papirarbeideren'. Artists: Jan-Erik Beck 2008. Art consultants: Erlend Leirdal & Cathinka Mehlum.
Jan-Erik Beck’s steel sculpture displays the course of paper manufacture in paper mills. The wavy ‘paper’ comprises the main part of the sculpture, and is made from corten steel, with a layer of copper added to it. Direct references to the workers at the Ranheim paper mill are also present in the list of names on a vertical plate at the back of the sculpture. These are employees at the factory who were given the Norwegian royal decoration for meritorious services. Also, terms from the paper industry have been attached to the vertical plate.
The fact that this work of art occupies the park adjacent to the old Ranheim railway station emphasises how the paper mill dominated the work and local environment at Ranheim for generations. Since its closure, the station has retained its function as the heart of Ranheim.
